Technology shares led a recovery on Wall Street at Friday's open. A day earlier, a rout fueled by fears of slowing data center construction had knocked the Nasdaq Composite into correction territory.
The Nasdaq gained 437 points, or 1.8%, in early trading, while the S&P 500 added 72 points, close to 1%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average moved the other way, slipping 129 points, or 0.2%.
Chipmakers did much of the lifting. Nvidia, closely watched as a barometer for the AI industry, climbed 6.6%, and Micron Technology jumped 9.8%.
The bounce followed a Thursday drop that wiped more than 1,400 points off the Nasdaq. A correction is a decline of at least 10% from a prior peak.
That slide reversed a rally that began right after this week's midterm elections. By Thursday, investors were weighing whether broad Democratic wins could bring new curbs on data center projects and a pullback in AI investment.
The rebound was still in its early hours, and Friday's gains were not yet settled when trading began.
