Adam Driver says he won’t return for HBO’s ‘Girls’ revival

Adam Driver will not appear in HBO's revival of "Girls," ruling out a return to the series that made him famous months after creator Lena Dunham's memoir described him as volatile on set.

Driver gave his answer while promoting "Paper Tiger," his new film with director James Gray. Asked whether he would come back, he said no and added that he wished the production the best of luck.

His refusal follows the publication of Dunham's 2026 memoir, "Famesick," which portrays a complicated relationship between the two. Dunham alleges that Driver once hurled a chair at the wall near her and calls him short-tempered, verbally aggressive, condescending and physically imposing, while also writing that he could be protective and even loving.

Driver has declined to engage with those claims. During press for a film at Cannes, he said he had no comment and was saving it all for his own book.

The revival, announced in mid-October, is planned as a limited five-episode run on HBO, with production set to begin in 2027. Dunham returns as Hannah Horvath alongside Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke and Zosia Mamet, and Andrew Rannells is back as Elijah Krantz.

Beyond those five actors, no other returning cast members have been named, and the plot has not been disclosed.

Driver played Adam Sackler, Hannah's boyfriend, and the role served as his breakout. He went on to play Kylo Ren in three "Star Wars" films and to star in "Marriage Story," "House of Gucci" and "Ferrari."

Dunham has said she has not spoken to Driver since the show ended in 2017. She has described having two different relationships with him, one on screen and one in life, and said that in her 20s she never thought to assert herself as his boss, believing harsh treatment was simply what great male geniuses do.
