Amazons, a hockey sex comedy that Don DeLillo published under the invented name Birdwell, is among the notable books coming out in November. The acclaimed American novelist has approved its return, but he appears to want little to do with it.
DeLillo's only preface for the new edition is a business card. It carries his name beneath a short statement saying he does not want to talk about the book.
The novel first reached bookshelves more than four decades before Heated Rivalry kicked off the current wave of hockey romance. That gives the reissue an unusual market: a ribald romp of ice hockey and sex arriving while the genre is popular.
Birdwell, the name on the spine, does not exist. DeLillo did not publicly acknowledge writing the book until 2020.
In the years since its first release, Amazons built a cult following even as copies grew increasingly hard to find. DeLillo signed off on the republication earlier this year, apparently with some reluctance.
