Outlander team to receive Bafta Scotland honor

Bafta Scotland will give its Outstanding Contribution to Television award to four members of the Outlander team, including stars Sam Heughan and Catriona Balfe, recognizing the historical fantasy series for its contributions to the industry.

The award will be presented at the full Bafta Scotland ceremony in Glasgow on November 15. Outlander wrapped this summer after a 12-year run spanning eight seasons.

Heughan played Jacobite soldier Jamie Fraser, and Balfe played his time-traveling love interest. The other two honorees are executive producers, among them Ronald D. Moore, who is being recognized for adapting Diana Gabaldon's novels for television.

It has been a tremendous pleasure to work with our Scottish crew, to utilise the Scottish locations and to learn more about Scottish culture and history.

Training and tourism

The awards body said the show left a lasting mark on Scotland's screen industry while opening doors for local talent. Over the course of the series, an initiative led by the production team created more than 170 trainee roles.

Scotland's tourist agency has also credited an "Outlander effect" with raising the country's international profile. Thousands of visitors now say they came to Scotland to see landscapes featured in TV and film productions.

Moore said working with the Scottish crew and locations had been a pleasure. American showrunner Matthew B. Roberts said the production arrived as outsiders and found a country and a crew that welcomed them.

Thirteen years on and I don't feel like a visitor when I step off the plane; I feel like I'm home.

Sequel and other nominees

The franchise is not finished in Scotland. A sequel, Blood of My Blood, premiered in 2025 and follows the lives of Jamie and Claire Fraser's parents; its second season debuted in September, and it continues to draw fans to the country.

Among this year's other contenders, I Swear, a biographical film about John Davidson's life growing up with Tourette syndrome, earned seven nominations. Dept. Q, a crime thriller based in Edinburgh, was nominated in three categories.
