Michael Mann hurt when holstered gun fires at L.A. range

Michael Mann, the 83-year-old director of "Heat," suffered a superficial injury Saturday when a weapon in its holster accidentally fired at a Los Angeles gun range, his representative said.

The Emmy-winning filmmaker went to a hospital for treatment and was being released, the representative said Sunday. The wound was described as minor and subcutaneous.

Los Angeles police officers answered a radio call reporting shots fired at the range and concluded the shooting was accidental. A department spokesperson said the injured person was taken to a local hospital in stable condition, and officers left once an injury report was complete.

Mann, a target shooter for decades, was in the middle of a practice session when the gun went off. The accident took place at a sanctioned range.

His reputation rests largely on crime films, starting with his 1981 feature debut "Thief" and continuing through "Manhunter" in 1986, "Heat" in 1995 and "Collateral." Mann said in 2017 that the "Heat" cast fired full-load blanks so the film would capture the true sound of gunfire instead of edited effects.

He remains busy in his 80s. His most recent film was "Ferrari," starring Adam Driver, and he is developing a "Heat" sequel drawn from his 2022 novel, written with Meg Gardiner, with filming expected to start early next year.
