OpenAI is acquiring Pierre Computer Company, a San Francisco software developer, so it can build the startup's Code.Storage infrastructure layer for Git directly into Codex, its AI-powered programming tool.
Neither company disclosed a price. Pierre Computer's staff is small, barely in the double digits, but the firm is well regarded for its size.
Besides Code.Storage, Pierre Computer is known for two open-source software libraries, Trees and Diffs. OpenAI already uses both inside Codex.
OpenAI named Pierre Computer's code-review tools as one reason for the purchase. It pointed to the Edit mode in Diffs and the recently released Highlights feature as especially useful to development teams.
We want to make Codex the place where developers and agents take on their most ambitious projects.

OpenAI said current Code.Storage customers can keep using the product until its features are moved into Codex. Pierre Computer's open-source projects will stay open, and OpenAI said it will keep contributing to them.
The deal follows OpenAI's own work on Git's limits. Its in-house engineers have been improving support for human coders and AI agents working in parallel, and earlier this week the company described Pando, a new back end for Git repositories built for concurrent work at scale.
OpenAI has pushed Codex harder this year, offering it to Mac users and expanding it to Windows.
